In Windows 8, the data and settings for mstsc.exe (Remote Desktop Connection) are stored in two primary locations: the user's Documents folder for connection files, and the Windows Registry for saved connections.

1. Connection Files (.rdp)

Default.rdp file: When you connect to a remote computer without explicitly saving the settings, mstsc saves the current configuration as a hidden file named Default.rdp. This file is located in the user's Documents folder.Location: C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\Default.rdp (it is a hidden file by default).User-created .rdp files: If you choose to save connection settings for specific servers (e.g., "WorkServer.rdp"), these files are saved by default in the Documents folder, but you can save them anywhere you prefer. These files contain the connection parameters like computer name, username hint, display settings, and local resources.

2. Windows Registry

The most recently used (MRU) list of connected servers and associated usernames is stored in the Windows Registry.

Server History and Username Hints: Every RDP server you have connected to, along with the last used username for each, is stored here:Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\ServersWithin this key, there are subkeys for each server, containing values like UsernameHint. Most Recently Used (MRU) List: The last 10 servers you connected to are also listed in a separate key:Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default
